Playing music on your Google Nest/Home speaker or display using Bluetooth
The following 3 steps will allow you to play music stored on your mobile device (phone or tablet) or computer on your Google Nest or Home speaker or display using Bluetooth. This includes music downloaded from iTunes, Audible, Apple Music and personal playlists.
Step 1. Pair your mobile device and speaker or display
From the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app
- Touch and hold the tile of the device that you want to pair
- Tap Settings > Audio > Paired Bluetooth devices > Enable pairing mode.
From your mobile device’s Bluetooth settings
- On your mobile device’s home screen, tap Settings > Bluetooth
- Turn on Bluetooth
- Tap the name of the speaker or display that you’d like to pair.
From your computer’s Bluetooth settings
Note: Steps vary depending on computer or laptop model.
Windows OS
- Select the Start button > type ‘Bluetooth’ > select Bluetooth settings from the list
- Turn on Bluetooth
- Tap the name of the speaker or display that you’d like to pair.
Mac OS
- Click the Apple menu > System preferences
- Find the Bluetooth icon
- Turn on Bluetooth
- Select the name of the speaker or display that you’d like to pair.
Step 2. Connect your mobile device and speaker or display
If your speaker or display is paired with multiple mobile devices, it will connect to the most recently paired device. Google has an excellent article that will help you to check which mobile devices are connected to your speaker or display.
Using your mobile device
- Open Bluetooth settings on your mobile device
- Under ‘Available devices’, tap the speaker or display that you paired to your mobile device.
Using your voice
If you prefer to use voice commands with the built-in Google Assistant, you can simply say: “Hey Google, Connect to Bluetooth“, and it will search for devices to connect to using Bluetooth.
Once linked, your mobile device will stay connected to your speaker or display until you disconnect. Again, you can simply say: “Hey Google, Disconnect to Bluetooth“.
Step 3. Enjoy listening to music
After your mobile device is paired and connected to your speaker or display, you can listen to music and playlists using basic and advanced music commands.
How to manage paired and connected devices
You can manage your devices using the Google Home app that’s free and available from both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Check which mobile device is paired with your device
- Open the Google Home app
- Touch and hold your device’s tile
- At the top right, tap Settings > Audio Paired Bluetooth devices
- You’ll see your mobile device and the date it was paired.
Unpair mobile device and your speaker or display
- Open the Google Home app
- Touch and hold the tile of the device that you want to unpair
- At the top right, tap Settings > Audio Paired Bluetooth devices
- Tap the X next to the device that you want to unpair Unpair.
Using your voice
You can also use voice commands to complete this action. Here are a few phrases to try:
- Turn on your speaker or display’s Bluetooth: “Hey Google, turn on Bluetooth”
- Check pairing status: “Hey Google, is Bluetooth active?”
- Check pairing status: “Hey Google, is Bluetooth paired?”
- Check pairing status: “Hey Google, is Bluetooth connected?”
- Exit Bluetooth pairing: “Hey Google, exit Bluetooth pairing”
- Exit Bluetooth pairing: “Hey Google, cancel Bluetooth pairing”
- Clear all paired devices: “Hey Google, clear all paired Bluetooth devices”
- Clear all paired devices: “Hey Google, clear all Bluetooth devices”
